Students from St Mary’s College visited Braidwater Group’s The Cashel housing development recently as part of an educational initiative delivered in partnership with WOMEN’STEC.

The visit provided pupils with a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand insight into careers within the construction and property sectors, while exploring the wide range of skills involved in delivering a modern residential development.

Hosted at The Cashel site, the students met with members of the Braidwater team across construction and management disciplines. The group was guided through the various stages of the construction process, learning about sustainable building practices, health and safety procedures, engineering, planning and the importance of collaboration across multiple professions.

The visit came about through WOMEN’STEC, an organisation dedicated to supporting women and girls across Northern Ireland to develop skills, confidence and career pathways in industries where women remain underrepresented. Through practical training, school engagement, employer engagement and initiatives such as the #NotJustForBoys Champions network, WOMEN’STEC works closely with industry partners to help create a more inclusive future workforce.

During the site tour, students had the opportunity to ask questions directly to professionals working within the sector and hear about the different routes available into construction, including apprenticeships, further education and professional careers.

Speaking following the visit, a spokesperson for Braidwater Group said:

“We were delighted to welcome students from St Mary’s College to The Cashel development. Initiatives like this are incredibly important in showcasing the variety of opportunities available within construction and development, particularly for young women considering future career paths in the industry. At the Braidwater Group, we believe it is vital that more women are encouraged to explore careers in construction, engineering and property, helping to build a more diverse, innovative and representative industry for the future. Working alongside organisations such as WOMEN’STEC allows us to play a positive role in inspiring the next generation of talent.”

Representatives from WOMEN’STEC also highlighted the importance of creating meaningful connections between education and industry to ensure young people can see the breadth of opportunities available to them.

The visit formed part of ongoing efforts by both organisations to encourage greater diversity, awareness and participation within the construction and STEM sectors across Northern Ireland.
