The Braidwater Group has reinforced its commitment to protecting worker health and wellbeing through its comprehensive support of the joint All-Island Silica Dust Campaign led by the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA).

The campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the dangers associated with respirable crystalline silica (RCS) exposure in construction and related industries, saw the Braidwater Group implement a coordinated programme of health and safety measures across its entire portfolio of active construction sites.
With more than 100 subcontractors engaged across multiple projects, the company ensured that critical occupational health messages were effectively communicated to a broad workforce operating across a variety of trades and working environments.
As part of its campaign response, the Braidwater Group reinforced its strict prohibition on dry cutting activities across all sites and worked closely with subcontractors to verify that appropriate water suppression systems and FFP3 respiratory protective equipment (RPE) were readily available, correctly utilised, and consistently enforced during all dust-generating operations.

The company also highlighted the importance of face fit testing to ensure that tight-fitting FFP3 masks provide an effective seal and deliver the intended level of protection for individual workers. Face fit testing remains a critical component of respiratory protection compliance and plays a vital role in safeguarding workers from harmful silica dust exposure.
Comprehensive toolbox talks were delivered across all active projects, ensuring workers and subcontractors fully understood the risks associated with silica dust exposure and the control measures required to manage those risks effectively. Attendance records were maintained throughout the campaign to demonstrate engagement, compliance, and effective communication across the organisation.
Exposure to respirable crystalline silica can cause serious and irreversible health conditions, including silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. The HSENI and HSA campaign seeks to encourage employers and workers to adopt robust preventative measures to reduce the risk of long-term occupational illness.

Commenting on the Braidwater Group’s participation in the campaign, Ciarán McMonagle, Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Manager, said:
“The health and wellbeing of everyone working on our sites remains our highest priority. The All-Island Silica Dust Campaign provided an excellent opportunity to reinforce key safety messages and ensure that our workforce and supply chain partners fully understand both the risks associated with silica dust and the measures required to control exposure.”
“At the Braidwater Group, we believe that prevention is always the most effective approach. Where hazards cannot be completely eliminated, we are committed to implementing robust controls that reduce exposure to the lowest practicable level. Through effective planning, engineering controls, appropriate respiratory protection, face fit testing, training, supervision, and ongoing monitoring, we continue to strengthen our approach to occupational health protection across all projects.”
The campaign also reinforces the hierarchy of control principle, which prioritises the elimination of hazards wherever reasonably practicable. Where silica dust generation cannot be fully avoided, the Braidwater Group has adopted a comprehensive risk-based approach incorporating water suppression systems, on-tool dust extraction, safe systems of work, respiratory protection, workforce training, supervision, and continuous monitoring to minimise exposure.
This proactive and structured response reflects the organisation’s strong safety culture, commitment to continuous improvement, and dedication to protecting the long-term health of its workforce.
By fully supporting the HSENI and HSA initiative, Braidwater Group continues to set a positive example for the construction sector, demonstrating how effective collaboration, leadership, and practical health protection measures can help create safer workplaces across the industry.
